Stéphane Henchoz is no longer the coach of Neuchâtel Xamax. The former Swiss international has to leave his position in the relegated Super League. Martín Rueda assumes the position on an interim basis.

Henchoz recently had an increasingly difficult position at Xamax. Seven defeats in a row brought Neuchâtel to penultimate place in the Challenge League. Since the month-long hiatus in competition due to a full-scale quarantine, almost nothing has gone as requested. Among other things, he established a 2: 3 against the last group Chiasso and recently significant losses against Aarau (2: 4), the Grasshoppers (0: 3) and Winterthur (0: 4).

“The negative spiral forces us to take this radical and painful step”

For Henchoz it was the second guest appearance outside of his youth club. In the first, he had to leave in 2019 after surprisingly leading the team to league maintenance in the Super League, in the second, Xamax was relegated this summer. “The negative spiral forces us to take this radical and painful step,” the club said.

Rueda, who coached Young Boys (2012/2013) and Lausanne-Sport (2010-2012) among others, will take care, according to the club, of the team in the remaining three games of the calendar year and on December 23 in the previous one. It works again at the Neuchâtel academy for young talents.
