Today behind closed doors in the bakeries and cafes of the Zurich bakery chain Buchmann. Even in the Sprüngli branches there is nothing with fresh Sunday braid after the decision of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) on Friday. “Closed on Sundays by decision of BAG,” reads the door of the Sprüngli branch in the Stadelhofen in Zurich.
On the other hand, at the Stocker bakery on Kreuzplatz, a few hundred meters away, people come and go. The Kurmann bakery in the center of Lucerne and the Hotz Rust bakery in Baar ZG are also open. The owner of the latter is the president of the Swiss Bakers Association Swissbacker (SBC), Silvan Hotz.
BAG’s decision was imprecise
“With its decision to keep take out places and restaurants open, the Federal Council has caused chaos in our industry,” SBC Director Urs Wellauer (55) tells BLICK. In little Switzerland there are 26 different solutions, some of which are incomprehensible.
According to Wellauer, immediately after Friday’s press conference, the association tried to join forces to obtain clarity for its members from the BAG. Lawyers had responded that bakeries and stores would have to close. A coffee with drinking seated at tables of four can stay open until 7pm
The association writes to its members that, in their opinion, it is permissible to keep bakeries that have been converted to takeout open and only offer food and beverages suitable for immediate consumption. However, the actual sale of groceries is not allowed, even for baked goods.
Swissbaker association wants clarification next week
According to Swissbaker, the requirements allow many interpretations. Also: “We went and are being bombarded with questions from our members.” The uncertainty is great. Getting an overview in this cantonal confusion and giving information to insecure members is in many cases an impossibility.
The association will do everything possible next week to create clarity in this jungle.
Swissbaker Chairman Hotz understands the annoyance of bakeries that couldn’t open on Sundays. “I can understand the disappointment of entrepreneurs when their respective cantonal governments do not see it as we do and therefore do not allow the sale of take-out products on Sundays,” he told BLICK upon request.
The regulations and possible take-out permits are regulated by the cantons.
