After it was said Tuesday that border traffic would be disrupted, it continues to operate, but with restrictions.
Now everything is different again in rail traffic with Italy. Both long-distance trains and regional trains from Tilo in Ticino are back in continuous operation, the latter starting on Sunday.
Eurocity trains run, but only at a reduced rate: a couple of daily trains between Zurich and Milan, one between Geneva and Milan, and one between Basel and Milan.
In Ticino, the end of the day for travelers in Chiasso on Thursday morning: Tilo S-Bahn trains end at the border and passengers have to change to an Italian train. «The situation was not clear. We didn’t know if we were going to get there, they all stayed with their own devices, ”says a traveler.
Decree of the Italian Government
The problem was caused by a decree approved by the Italian government last week. The railways would have to measure the fever of all travelers. They must check if all passengers have a negative corona test and carry a self-declaration for the purpose of the trip. Trains can also be 50 percent busy.
As a result, SBB announced on Tuesday that they would not be able to meet these requirements and would therefore stop train traffic on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga and Italy’s Transport Minister Paola Di Micheli agreed on a reduced train offer. The controls ordered in the decree are now being carried out by Trenitalia personnel at the Chiasso and Domodossola (I) border stations.
No other solution
SBB media spokesperson Ottavia Masserini told SRF News: “We were so far along on Tuesday that we saw no other solution. In the meantime, there have been more developments. “And furthermore:” We always try to find good solutions. We are very sorry that we were not successful here on the first try. “
SBB did not want to pressure Italy. “It was simply a matter of the fact that we could not have carried out the controls that are prescribed in the decree,” Masserini continues. That is why Italians are now doing it themselves.
That is why the regional trains of Tilo (Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia) will travel to Italy again from Sunday. So almost everything as before in border traffic.
