An entrepreneur is unlikely to make this mistake a second time. His painting, which cost 300,000 francs, was almost destroyed. The businessman flew from Düsseldorf Airport (D) to Tel Aviv on November 27. The problem: when registering, the entrepreneur forgot a flat cardboard box. Inside: a painting by the surrealist Yves Tanguy (1900-1955). The mass: about 40 by 60 centimeters.
Only when he arrived in Israel did the art lover realize his fatal mistake. He tried to locate the painting but was unsuccessful. Then he turned against his nephew who lives in Belgium. Despite all the questions, the painting never disappeared. Eventually the nephew drove to Düsseldorf airport and reported the loss to the police.
Investigators went to work and contacted the Düsseldorf airport cleaning company. And then the officers got to the waste paper containers and found them in time. “In fact, the valuable painting was at the bottom,” police wrote in a message.
Brazen attempt to smuggle at the airport
This is not the only curious incident at Düsseldorf airport in recent days: a man (50) tried to smuggle the equivalent of 376,000 francs through customs in shoes and underwear.
First, German Federal Police officers found 269,000 francs on the specially prepared shoe soles of the 50-year-old who wanted to fly from the West German city to Turkey. Customs officials who called and found another 100,000 euros in the man’s underwear. A spokesman for the authorities said Thursday that he had kept them there “floating freely, hoping they would not look there.” The sum of money consisted mainly of 500 euro notes.
I couldn’t remember the friend’s name
According to customs, he got the money from a friend and should transport it to Turkey. However, he did not remember the name or contact details of this acquaintance.
Officials secured the money. Now it is checked if it comes from legal sources or if there are signs of money laundering. The 50-year-old is also under investigation for failing to register the cash. The find was made two weeks ago, but customs didn’t report it until Thursday. Customs indicated that cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared upon entry and exit. (jmh / SDA)
