Operations at Zurich airport also suffered the second corona wave in November. After passenger numbers had already plummeted in September and October, they fell even more dramatically in the traditionally weak November compared to the previous year.
Compared with October, the number of passengers served has practically halved. In November, 245,187 passengers flew over Zurich airport, as the airport operator announced on Thursday. In October there were still 468,616 passengers. In total, 89 percent fewer passengers were handled in November than in the same month last year.
The downward trend accelerates
Therefore, the downward trend has accelerated again with a tick compared to the previous two months. There was a pause in both local and transit passengers. The latter’s share was still 16 percent.
With 5,660 takeoffs or landings, the number of flight movements was 71 percent below the previous year, meaning the drop was somewhat less drastic than the number of passengers. As a result, however, the aircraft’s seat occupancy dropped again significantly to 41.8 percent. An average of 71 passengers sat on an arriving or departing plane.
Freight also decreased
The freight balance is a little less bad. With 27,630 tonnes of cargo, it was handled almost 20 percent less than in November 2019.
In October, the airport lowered its expectations for the year as a whole. At that time, a total number of passengers served of 8 to 9 million was forecast for 2020, after 31.5 million in 2019. (vnf / SDA)
