As soon as the National Council and the Council of States drafted the Covid-19 law in the fall session at a rapid pace, the Friends of the Constitution group took the referendum against it. After a month or so, they say they have collected the necessary signatures to bring the law to the people.
Its objective: to prevent the Federal Council’s powers under the emergency law from being subsequently legitimized during the pandemic and extended until the end of 2021. Because the law partially converts decisions made under the emergency law in the Corona crisis into common law. Including, for example, financial aid to companies. Too much power for the Federal Council, discover the friends of the constitution.
Fear of mandatory vaccination
The group’s co-chair, Marion Russek, warned of the risk of extending the emergency law at launch and made a historically sensitive decision. “The historical experience from 1930 to 1945 shows that afterwards it is difficult to return to normal democratic processes,” he said.
In addition, according to the Friends of the Constitution, the Covid-19 law makes vaccination with poorly proven vaccines mandatory. Medications may be approved through an expedited process. Federal Councilor Alain Berset (48) denied this risk last month: “There is no mandatory vaccination.”
“It’s about the beginning”
It is no coincidence that the 50,000 signatures are still more than a month away before the collection period expires: According to spokesperson Christoph Pfluger, the association now has more than 2,000 members, although it was founded in June. Skeptics of the Crown, in particular, feel treated by Friends of the Constitution.
The vote is not expected to take place until June 2021. That won’t do much more for the referendum group. Because it is an urgent law, it has already entered into force, and will only apply until the end of 2021 anyway. “We are concerned about the beginning,” says Pfluger in the “Tagesanzeiger.”
More demo planned
The Friends of the Constitution certainly let the corks explode: on December 16, the group will meet under the slogan “Let’s celebrate freedom and humanity together!” at the Bundesplatz in order to “overcome fear of the other, fueled by the fear-inducing and guilt-ridden policies of the authorities”, as they write in the invitation. They will wear masks, but those present are asked to write a message of resistance on them.
