In the end, Borussia Mönchengladbach no longer had it in their own hands to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League. With no chances against Real Madrid, the Gladbachers had to wait for the result in Milan between Inter and Shakhtar Donetsk with the Swiss Yann Sommer, Breel Embolo, Nico Elvedi (all eleven starters) and Denis Zakaria (from minute 46).
After long minutes it was a fact: in Italy it remained 0-0, so Gladbach qualified for the knockout phase of the “premier category” for the first time in the club’s history. This, of course, put the insufficient performance against Real Madrid in the background.
Really sovereign
Real Madrid had never left doubts about the outcome of the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach at home and safely avoided the first break in the Champions League group stage. The “real” took the scepter from the beginning, played offensively and tied the Gladbachers behind.
Especially on the left side of the defense, the “colts” showed great difficulty, which Real punished in the person of Karim Benzema. The French scored two crosses in the first half (9th and 32nd) with a header.
After the break, the German guests were able to improve, but Real were much closer to the next goal. Then, with great skill and sometimes luck, Sommer avoided the 0: 3.
Inter out
For Antonio Contes Inter Milan, the European agreement has already ended after the group stage. The “Nerazzurri” missed the required victory against Shakhtar Donetsk and only played 0-0.
The Ukrainians, still in second place before the last round, at least qualified for the Europa League thanks to the goalless draw.
