The situation of the crown in Switzerland looks bad. The Federal Council reacts and wants to take matters back into its own hands. To this end, corona measures should be standardized and reinforced throughout the country. The new restrictions are expected to go into effect on December 12 and will initially apply until January 20, 2021.
The main changes:
- Restaurants, shops and markets, leisure and sports activities close at 7:00 p.m. and are closed on Sundays.
- A maximum of five people from two households applies to private events. Celebrations of up to ten people from December 24 to 26 and December 31 are excluded.
Hotellerie Suisse president Andreas is very concerned about the new announcements from Bern: “If we have to close restaurants at 7pm, then they can close completely, so to speak, even if the federal government doesn’t order this. But the basic requirements to run the business no longer exist. “Züllig asks for additional help for companies that need it. And fast. For example, that the public sector pays fixed costs – a-Fonds-perdu.
The basic requirement to run the business no longer exists.
The measures provided by the Federal Council will fall into very lucrative holidays. In hindsight, was it therefore wrong for associations to fight tougher measures in the fall? Züllig brushes it off: “No one could have foreseen that. In October, the numbers were relatively good and we were sure that we and the Federal Council had it under control. “
The Swiss Trade Association is also angry. The Federal Council must first provide evidence that catering and retail are actually the hot spots of the pandemic before further exacerbations are imposed on them. In its press release, the trade association explicitly defends itself against confinement, but also against other measures such as the obligation to work from home.
Positive signs from politics
The Federal Council, for its part, received a positive response from the majority of Swiss parties. SP, CVP and Greens support the plans. “Now solidarity and responsibility are needed again to reduce the number of infections and also help the affected industries,” CVP writes on Twitter.
However, the wavering reactions of the Confederation and the cantons are criticized. “The Federal Council must finally present a binding strategy to contain the coronavirus and align its measures with the previously defined target values,” the Greens write in their position paper on Covid-19.
The SVP, for its part, criticizes the widespread closures of restaurants and the restriction of store opening hours as an “arbitrary” measure. The Federal Council must not interfere with the sovereignty of the cantons, especially since the situation is not the same in all cantons, according to a statement issued Tuesday night.
