The Basel economist Silvio Borner († 79), renowned beyond the borders of Switzerland, has died. He died on Monday, as his family announced in an obituary Wednesday in the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung.”
Borner studied at the University of St. Gallen and received his doctorate. After holding positions at Yale American University, among others, he completed his habilitation at the University of St. Gallen, where he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Economics in 1976. He subsequently accepted a Chair in Economics at the University of Basel, where he did research and teach until his retirement in 2009.
No funeral service
Silvio Borner is known to the general public through his outstanding publications in numerous media. For example, he published his liberal views in columns in the “Weltwoche.” His main areas of research included development economics, institutional economics, and international economic relations.
Borner repeatedly paid special attention to Swiss energy policy. The renowned expert regularly criticized Switzerland’s energy strategy well into old age. “You went through this life free of spirit, self-determined, strong and always upright,” the family praised his personality in the message. At Borner’s request, a memorial service would be waived, he said. (SDA)
