Texas arrests Trump and takes him to Supreme Court
In the US, the Donald Trump camp is now moving directly to the Supreme Court after dozens of rejected lawsuits to overturn the result of the lost presidential election. Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing four other states.
In the lawsuit published Tuesday, he called for the election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin to be invalidated. There, Democratic challenger Joe Biden had secured victory against Trump. It is unclear whether the Washington Supreme Court will accept the lawsuit.
In Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin, the total is 62 electoral votes, and ultimately the lawsuit is about taking Biden. Paxton wants the electorates in these states to be commissioned by local parliaments or not appointed in the first place.
“Really embarrassing complaint”
Trump has been claiming since the election that massive fraud stole his victory. Neither he nor his lawyers were able to present convincing evidence. Since then, lawsuits have been dismissed in various states in more than three dozen cases.
Paxton adds to the sometimes adventurous argumentation of the above demands: The probability of Biden’s electoral victory in all four states is said to be 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.
Even before the election, Trump had set out to quickly fill a vacant Supreme Court seat with conservative attorney Amy Coney Barrett, and touched on a possible dispute over the election outcome. Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes. However, previous demands from the Trump camp have been rejected equally by justices, regardless of whether they were nominated by Democratic or Republican presidents.
Those responsible in the affected states were tough on the lawsuit. Paxton’s Wiscosin counterpart, Josh Kaul, spoke on Twitter of a “really shameful lawsuit.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel noted that the lawsuit’s arguments had already been dismissed by several courts. Therefore, this is just a “public relations joke”. (sda / dpa)
