On Tuesday, the government extended by a week the measures introduced on November 23 to combat the Covid 19 pandemic. According to a statement, the government will not decide until next week whether a relaxation regarding the holidays is possible. In particular, time should also be used to coordinate further actions with the federal government and neighboring cantons.
The Basel government justifies adherence to current measures with the still high number of corona cases. The growth of new infections has slowed and some stabilization has been achieved in hospitals. However, for loosening, the effect came less quickly and clearly than necessary, he said.
Number of cases still high
Since the stricter measures went into effect on November 30, the number of people infected with the coronavirus has risen from 5,424 to 6,158. Additionally, the number of deaths related to Covid 19 disease increased from 77 to 94 during the same period.
There were 150 corona patients in hospital care on Tuesday compared to 145 on November 30. Of these, 106 and 107 respectively had residence in Basel-Stadt. The highest number of people hospitalized was registered on December 1 with 158 – 120 of them residing in the canton. There have been between 18 and 25 patients in the intensive care unit in the last few days.
Not only the restaurants and bars of the canton of the city will be closed until December 20, but also the gyms, the artificial ice rinks, the indoor swimming pools, the casinos, as well as the erotic and leisure facilities. An upper limit of 15 people still applies to events.
