- The tallest mountain on earth is now officially 86 centimeters taller, specifically, it is now 8,848.86 meters high. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced this.
- The previously accepted height of 8,848 meters comes from Indian researchers from the 1950s. Since then, however, various teams have obtained slightly different results.
- Now China and Nepal, on whose common border the mountain lies, have measured and calculated together for the first time.
Nepal wanted to measure only first. But after a visit from China’s head of state and party, Xi Jinping, in 2019, it should be a joint project under the banner of “eternal friendship,” as it was called at the time. In it, China emphasized infrastructure aid to Nepal, which in turn recognized Taiwan and Tibet as parts of China.
Measurements with GPS and gravity
Teams from both countries climbed the mountain and measured there with angle measurement devices based on known points in the valley and devices that receive GPS signals. The Nepalese team came up in 2019, the Chinese this year, supposedly the only team in history.
To arrive at the new value, gravity measurements were also performed in the environment and calculations based on a computer model.
