Heavy snowfall led to accidents and train cancellations in Switzerland over the weekend. It should keep snowing until Wednesday. But the sun returns on the weekend.
Snow as far as the eye can see: After an above-average warm autumn, Ticino and Graubünden were buried under a thick layer of snow over the weekend. A snow depth of more than one meter was measured at Airolo. Certain places in Graubünden also broke the subway mark.
But go on. In Samedan, for example, almost half a meter of fresh snow was measured again on Monday morning. In certain places, up to 12 inches is also expected during the day.
The white splendor did not please everyone: in several cantons there were accidents on the road due to snow. There were more than a dozen accidents in St. Gallen and more than two dozen in Graubünden.
Anyone who switched to the train because of this had no better. Several connections were canceled and cannot be used again on Monday. Due to the risk of avalanches, there are no trains from Pontresina to Tirano and Poschiavo. Since the roads are not passable either, there are no replacement buses available here. Therefore, Poschiavo can only be reached via Italy.
There are also faults on other train routes. Replacement buses were used between Chur and Arosa over the weekend. The operation on the Furka car transporter between Realp and Oberwald is still closed, as the road from Realp to Hospental is closed due to the danger of avalanches.
Snow is usually always welcome in ski areas. But the large numbers that fell in recent days also caused problems: the women’s ski races in St. Moritz had to be canceled due to the risk of avalanches.
Also on Monday, the “considerable” level of danger exists in all Grisons and parts of Valais. This is the third level of the five point scale. In Ticino, the danger of avalanches is even “high”. According to the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (SLF), conditions along the secured slopes are critical.
It’s still snowing
In Ticino it should continue to snow until Monday and Tuesday. As of Wednesday the situation will probably calm down, the sun will shine again and it should remain dry. The situation is similar in Graubünden and in southern Valais. This should especially please the ski areas. With enough snow and good weather, you can count on plenty of winter sports enthusiasts on the weekend.
Some flakes can also fall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the lowlands. But it is doubtful that they continue to exist. Temperatures are always above freezing. Especially on weekends, the thermometer in Zurich goes up to five degrees again. Although there is currently a thin layer of snow on the Uetliberg to reach the city by sledding, it is clearly not enough.
