In view of the increasing number of corona cases in several German-speaking cantons, the Federal Council established an ultimatum. If the cantons in question do not act on their own, the federal government will step in and take further action for certain regions at the end of the week, Health Minister Alain Berset (48) announced on Friday.
Over the weekend, the public threat was followed by video conferences with the cantonal governments of St. Gallen, Thurgau, Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, Aargau, Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft. Alongside Berset, Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga (60) spoke to the garbage cantons. Today, the Federal Council finally also takes Zurich and Ticino to its chest.
Report to Aargau and Thurgau
At first, the canton of Aargau is not impressed by the threat from federal Bern. In a press conference, the President of the Government and the director of health Jean-Pierre Gallati (SVP) announced today that the measures of the crown are not hardened. Instead, he used the public’s attention to explain why, from his point of view, the situation today is not so bad.
You cannot speak of an “urgent emergency” that requires immediate action, he said, referring to the statistics. The number of hospitalizations and deaths has been stable for several weeks, said canton doctor Yvonne Hummel. Gallati also stressed that there are still enough free hospital beds in the canton. However, it is also a fact that the number of plays in Aargau is currently just above the critical limit of 1 in 1.02. This means that 100 infected people infect 102 other people. According to the federal scientific working group, a value would have to be reached below 0.8, or even better below 0.7, in order to control the pandemic.
The canton of Aargau wants to wait and see how the other cantons react to the threat from Berset. Gallati is convinced that new measures only make sense if they are taken in a coordinated manner. Discussions are ongoing with the other cantons in northwestern Switzerland and with Zurich. At most, on Thursday they will report on the tightening, said the health director. By then, the situation in the other cantons will have “cleared up”.

Like the Aargau, the Zurich government may not decide until Thursday. At least some cantons are likely to further restrict public and private events and temporarily close leisure facilities.
