Kaffi lovers beware: crème coffee could be 10 percent more expensive next year. This is due to the effects of the corona pandemic.
If restrictions due to the corona pandemic continue as before, coffee lovers should pay up to 10 percent more for a cup of their favorite drink in 2021. This is the conclusion of the interest group CafetierSuisse. This year the price per cup of coffee has already risen moderately.
“If the crisis in the catering industry continues into the next year, more significant price increases of up to 10 percent may be necessary to reverse the decline in sales due to protection concept restrictions,” said the president of CafetierSuisse, Hans-Petter Oettli, in a statement at today’s Interest Group Cited Annual Press Conference.
In 2020, the median price per cup of coffee in German-speaking Switzerland rose three cents again, after falling three cents for the first time since the survey began last year. On average, a crème coffee in Switzerland costs 4.25 francs in the current year. This means that the price is back to the 2018 level, as CafetierSuisse writes.
10,000 jobs threatened
The association also emphasizes the strong effects of the corona pandemic on Swiss coffees. Each new tightening of protective measures is an additional burden on companies, it is said. If they are unavoidable for epidemiological reasons, the association demands prompt compensatory payments.
Countless cafes have already reached their “economic resilience” and 100,000 jobs are in danger of being lost, according to CafetierSuisse.
