In Switzerland it will continue to snow until around Monday evening, reports SRF Meteo. The snow line falls in Ticino at 600 to 800 meters. This means that there is still a great danger of avalanches.
In some areas of Ticino, in southern Graubünden and in the Engadine, snow has been falling almost without interruption since early Friday morning, as SRF Meteo announced on Sunday. Sometimes the snow turned to rain.
At Airolo, another 53 centimeters of fresh snow was measured on Sunday morning, and the total depth of snow increased to 105 centimeters. A lot of snow also fell in neighboring areas to the north, such as Urserental, Urner Reuss Valley, Goms, Haslital and Engelbergertal.
According to Meteonews, there were also large amounts of fresh snow in Göschenen and Andermatt with 86 centimeters. In the canton of Graubünden, 100 centimeters of snow fell in San Bernardino and 75 centimeters in Scuol.
In the eastern parts of the country and in the south, according to Meteonews, rainfall is likely to continue overnight. This is expected to add another 20 and locally up to 50 centimeters of snow between southern Valais, the Gotthard region and southern Grisons on Monday morning.
Problems in rail traffic
Large amounts of snow created problems for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, among other things, which reported a temporary disruption on the route between Andermatt and Sedrun on Sunday morning on Twitter. However, the Furka carrier vehicle between Oberwald VS and Realp UR was suspended on Sunday until further notice. The reason for this was the closure of the road between Realp and Hospental due to the danger of avalanches.
The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) reported several line interruptions on Sunday. Therefore, the route between Schanf and Scuol-Tarasp was interrupted due to the risk of snow slides. Due to the danger of avalanches, the RhB closed the Bernina line between Pontresina and Poschiavo on Saturday night. Since the road was also closed, replacement buses could not be used.
SBB stopped rail traffic between Chur and Arosa on Sunday afternoon due to heavy snowfall.
It snowed much less in western Switzerland. Rail traffic was affected by snow in the Vallée de Joux VD and on the JU Freiberg.
The snowfall also caused problems on the streets. In the canton of St. Gallen alone, there were more than a dozen personal accidents with property damage between Saturday and Sunday. In the canton of Graubünden there were more than two dozen traffic accidents over the weekend.
Some roads in Ticino were closed, not only because of snowfall. There was a rockfall near Gudo. Due to a landslide, the cantonal road between S. Nazzaro and Vairano was closed.
Great danger of avalanches and even more snow.
The large amount of fresh snow in the Ticino mountains and in southern Grisons created a great avalanche hazard. According to SRF Meteo, there is a level 4 avalanche hazard on the five-level risk scale throughout northern Ticino, including Centovalli, the southern Graubünden valleys and the Upper Engadine.
From the south of Valais, through the eastern Bernese Oberland, to Alpstein and in the other areas of Grisons, danger level 3 applies, i.e. considerable.
According to SRF Meteo, the avalanche hazard will remain virtually unchanged on Monday.
