On Friday evening at around 8 pm, the canton police received a report that the regional train on the route between Estavayer and Payerne in Montet had hit several cows, as the Friborg canton police announced on Saturday. At the scene, officials found that the train had struck six cattle despite an emergency brake.
One of the animals was trapped under the train, so the transport police, the fire department and the SBB rescue train were called. One person was slightly injured during emergency braking. Passengers were asked to wait on the train until the damaged train was towed to Cugy station, where they could transfer to a bus, it was said.
Injured Ranger
When the rest of the herd escaped, the Freiburg and Vaudois police patrols had to search the region. Three cattle were found in the center of Cugy. Two animals were rescued by their owners. A third cattle fled towards the A1 motorway, so rangers were called in to stun the animal. According to the police, during this action the cow attacked one of the rangers and slightly injured him.
Rail traffic was interrupted for 3.5 hours, replacement buses were used. An investigation has been launched.
