The Estavayer-Payerne regional train struck several cows around 8 p.m. Friday in Montet FR, police from the canton of Friborg said. At the scene, officials found that the train had struck six cattle despite an emergency brake.
One of the animals was trapped under the train, so the transportation police and the SBB fire and rescue train were called. Passengers were told to wait on the train until the damaged train could be towed to Cugy Station, where they could transfer to a bus. One person was slightly injured as a result of emergency braking.
The cow ran onto the road and had to be anesthetized.
When the rest of the pack fled, the Freiburg and Vaudois police patrols had to search the region. Three bovines were found in the center of Cugy FR. 2 animals were rescued by their owners.
A third cattle fled towards the A1 motorway, so rangers were called in to stun the animal. During this action, the cow attacked one of the rangers and slightly injured him. Rail traffic was interrupted for 3.5 hours, so replacement buses were running. At present there is no longer any interference with rail traffic. An investigation has been launched. (szm)
