- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is now headed by German diplomat Helga Schmid.
- The 59-year-old Secretary General was confirmed by the OSCE Ministerial Council.
- Among other things, Schmid was a top EU negotiator on the Iran nuclear deal.
Schmid recently headed the General Secretariat of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and thus played a key role in EU diplomacy.
In addition, other high positions that had been vacant since July due to disagreement between member states were filled.
Italian Matteo Mecacci becomes director of ODHIR, which specializes in human rights. Former Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrachmanov became the high commissioner for national minorities. Maria Teresa Ribeiro from Portugal assumes the role of representative of press freedom.
As the world’s largest security organization, the OSCE is committed to stability, peace and democracy. The members are 57 countries in Europe, North America and Central Asia.
The OSCE participates, among other things, with a civil observation mission in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
