Ticino woke up on Friday morning under a blanket of snow. It was a danger level four out of five. Road conditions were precarious and individual roads in southern Ticino were closed. There were landslides.

According to the summary of the Viasuisse transport service, the heavy snowfall in Ticino has caused several road closures. Road traffic in southern Ticino, near the border, was slow. Traffic jams formed in front of the truck customs in Chiasso. In Biasca and Gambarogno, roads were closed after landslides.

Due to snowfall, the A2 St. Gotthard motorway on the Ticino side was closed to trucks in both directions in the afternoon. Heavy traffic stopped in waiting rooms, TCS reported. In addition, several roads in the Canton of Ticino were closed due to roads covered in snow or black ice.

Heavy snowfall also affected rail traffic between Locarno and Airolo. SBB reported in the afternoon that travelers should expect train delays and cancellations until noon on Saturday.

Canton Ticino police called on the population to be careful on Friday and recommended not leaving the house if possible. Images on social media showed snow-covered palm trees in Lugano, snow-covered cars in Tesserete or saccharified trees in Valcolla.

Stunning south facing position

According to the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology (Meteo-Switzerland), there has been conspicuous congestion in the south since Thursday night. This caused heavy snowfall in Ticino and the southern valleys of Graubünden, on the northern side of the Alps, the foehn blowing with wind peaks expected of up to 150 km / h until Friday evening.

The Leventina and the Sottoceneri were particularly affected by the snowfall. According to Meteo-Switzerland, precipitation should turn into rain on Friday night below 800 meters above sea level.

In southeastern Switzerland, the Meteonews weather service expected more than a meter of fresh snow by Sunday. Even in the lowlands on the north side of the Alps, there could be some snow on Saturday night.
