Without New Year’s Eve, without Gidio, without Bloch: the Ausserrhoder government calls for no traditional occasions

Due to the epidemiological situation, the New Year’s Eve clauses cannot be carried out this winter. The cantonal police and the labor inspectorate want to monitor compliance with the rules and intervene in case of violations.

(P.S) The biggest traditional event in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, New Year’s Eve, cannot take place at the turn of the year. No more traditional events can be held in Appenzell Ausserrhoden either, the cantonal office announced. The epidemiological situation due to the coronavirus does not allow it. The governing council instructs everyone involved to adhere to the legal requirements and renounce the life of tradition for once. The authorities verify compliance with the applicable regulations on site. If they are raped, they will intervene.

Call to resign

The governing council of Appenzell Ausserrhoden instructs all those involved – Chlausenschuppel, Fasnachtspeople, Bloch societies and guests from near and far – to comply with the legal requirements and renounce the traditions lived differently and their visits in the coming period.

On all these occasions, especially when chatting on New Years Eve (December 31) and Old (January 13), people get together. In the current Corona situation, this should not exist under any circumstances. New Years Eve is very popular with locals and guests from near and far. If it were carried out on New Year’s Eve, the risk of infection with the corona virus would be too high. The rules that everyone knows (avoid contact, keep your distance, wear face masks) could not be followed by either the actors or the many spectators on New Year’s Eve and other occasions, the message continues.

Applicable regulations would be violated

Current federal regulations make New Years Eve and other occasions impossible:

  • Meetings of more than 15 people in public spaces are prohibited.

  • Singing in groups and in front of an audience is prohibited.

  • A maximum of 10 people is allowed to participate in meetings with friends.

The governing council and community representatives have expected a significant improvement in the epidemiological situation in recent weeks. This improvement has not occurred. Despite the search for ways in which New Year’s Eve could safely take place, it turned out that this is not possible. Municipalities support the instruction that New Year’s Eve and other events cannot be held in view of the crown situation.

The cantonal chancellery writes that there is a general understanding among the Schuppelns. Many New Year’s Eve boys had already announced before the decision of the canton and the municipalities that they would voluntarily refrain from chatting. The cantonal police and the labor inspectorate monitor compliance with the applicable regulations at the site. If they are raped, they will intervene.

The restrictions due to the corona pandemic will apply throughout Switzerland until after the New Year celebrations. That is why, as in many places in Switzerland, all other typical events of this time of year such as Carnival, Gidio Hosestoss or Bloch must be canceled.
