Sometimes joy and sadness are so close together in football. FC Zurich had to find out about this in Geneva on Wednesday night. In the 91st minute, Wilfried Gnonto, who had been substituted a few minutes earlier, had the opportunity to score the winning goal for the Zurich team. But the 17-year-old missed the empty goal from an acute angle and hit the post.
Servettes Theo Valls did better. With the final whistle, the Frenchman made it 2-1 for the hosts at Stade de Genève in the 94th minute. 24-year-old FCZ defender Nathan left a cold shoulder and also defeated Yannick Brecher at the Zürcher Tor.
Overall, the finals made up for a long and disappointing game. In the duel between the fourth in the table from Zurich and the bottom of the Super League in Geneva, the defensive ranks dominated the action for a long time. Had viewers been admitted to the game, the mood would have likely been clouded by what was shown, at least until the finals.
In the last 20 minutes or so, teams caught up on what they hadn’t been able to do for over an hour: scenes from the offense. But in order:
- 69. Minute: The Servettiens take the lead with a strange blow. After a low cross, Brecher and Nathan disagree over who should clear the ball. Grejohn Kyei knows how to use confusion in the Zurich defense, he takes the ball and pushes it over the line.
- 74. Minute: The joy of Geneva is fleeting. After some strong preparatory work from Blaz Kramer, Toni Domgjoni uses a wonderful move to equalize.
The defeat is particularly bitter for FCZ, as the Limmatstadt team had more game for a long time. But the Zurich team failed to turn their superiority into at least one points victory. With this defeat, the FCZ had to leave the field as the loser of Massimo Rizzo for the first time.
Servette emits a red lantern
While Zurich returns to fifth place, Servette can hand the red lantern to Vaduz and is now eighth on the table. For the Servettiens, the game in Basel continues on Saturday. A day later, the FCZ receives Lausanne-Sport in Letzigrund.
