“One Hundred Years of Sleeping Beauty”: Letters for 100 Years From Now
How was the 2020 pandemic year? What will people need to know 100 years from now? What can interest you?
The city of Freiburg in southwestern Germany started a special project for the city’s 1000th birthday in 2120: Citizens can write letters that are not supposed to be opened for a hundred years.

“The letter campaign offers a unique opportunity to send a message to the future,” Mayor Martin Horn said early Thursday.
Until July 15, 2021, the letters can be dropped in the anniversary mailbox in front of the Old City Hall or sent in another envelope to the City Anniversary project group. The envelope of the letter should say who should read it in 100 years.
It could be your own descendants, the future owners of the home you currently live in, the federal chancellor, or the coach of a soccer club, the city suggested. The back of the envelope should contain the sender’s name, including the address and other voluntary information about the person.
“After that, people’s thoughts fall into a hundred-year slumber,” he said. The letters are stored in the city archive and delivered to the specified recipients in 2120. “This creates a collective legacy for posterity, texts and thoughts from these twenties so different that they cannot be found in any history book, newspaper or novel “.
