Operation Wave took more than five years. The action was directed against a Nigerian criminal organization. “This was structured in a very professional way,” said media spokesman Florian Frei of the Zurich Canton Police.
Cash and cocaine smuggled into the body
The organization has transported cocaine to Switzerland on a large scale for years. The couriers smuggled the drugs on their bodies or in carts from abroad across the border. In Switzerland, cocaine was distributed and prepared for resale. After the drugs were sold, the couriers smuggled the cash out of the country on their bodies.

As the cantonal police wrote, the Zurich investigations led to several parallel proceedings in Switzerland and abroad. More than 200 people were arrested in total. Investigators were able to seize 115 kilograms of cocaine and 15 kilograms of marijuana. “This is a considerable blow to the cocaine trade in Switzerland,” says Florian Frei of the Zurich canton police. “You can also feel this in the market.” Specifically, there is now less cocaine on the market.

The canton of Zurich police led the investigation together with the prosecution. “The whole operation started in Zurich,” explains Frei. The trade has expanded throughout Switzerland. Therefore, nine Swiss cantons participated in Operation “Wave”. The investigators also worked closely with Eurojust, Europol, Interpol and also affected countries like Austria, Germany and France.
