Mick Schumacher follows his father Michael in Formula 1. The 21-year-old will receive a multi-year contract with the Haas racing team from 2021. “An incredible feeling,” he says in an interview with the DPA.
How relieved are you that your Formula 1 dream is coming true?
Mick Schumacher: Of course, it is an incredible feeling. I definitely haven’t realized one hundred percent yet. I am happy that it is starting soon. It’s crazy that it is now. May the hard days of work bear fruit.
When did you find out that the move to Haas would work?
After the September weekend in Sochi, we received the news that things were going well. But all was not yet finished. So I didn’t find out long before. But it’s a great thing. It is my dream that is now coming true.

Mick Schumacher is the son of the record Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher. The 21-year-old won the 2018 Formula 3 European Champion title. As a Ferrari junior, he now leads the Formula 2 overall rankings before the end of the season. Next year he will drive in Formula 1 for the American team Haas.
With what starting number will you compete?
4 and 7 are my favorite numbers. Since everyone is taken, I chose 47. If you add up all of our family’s birthdays, you get 47.
Who did you share your joy with first?
The first one I called was my family, of course they were happy for me. We are all looking forward to next year.
What do you expect of yourself in your debut year?
I hope I can do my best and develop more as a driver. That I can build a connection with the team as close as possible so that we can all work together in the right direction. I’m sure we will have two very hungry drivers.
How do you deal with the public’s expectation with your famous name?
The expectations of many have to be dampened a bit. We’re not going to race for wins next year, even if I wanted to. It will be my first year. How quickly I get used to Formula 1 will be an interesting factor. What is clear is that I will do my best.
Lewis Hamilton is pursuing many of his records from his father. Do you want to return the best grades to the family?
I am here and now and I am happy to be a Formula 1 driver next year. So we have to see what the future brings us.
