Why do some people suffer more when they have contracted the coronavirus, but many have only weak symptoms or no symptoms at all? The American Society for Microbiology has published a study with a surprising answer: The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine could play an important role.
The higher the concentration of antibodies in the blood due to the MMR vaccine, the weaker the symptoms of Covid-19. Therefore, the severity of the disease is inversely proportional to the strength of the body’s vaccination response. In all, only 80 people were examined in the study. But the results are so good that they make you sit up and realize it.
Vaccination is crucial
The crazy thing about the study result: The researchers only found the correlation in vaccinated people. In people without the MMR vaccine, the researchers were unable to show a connection between the antibodies and a lighter course. Nor with people who had survived one of the diseases in the past.
Mumps Antibodies Are Crucial
Another important study result: only the mumps antibodies from vaccination are decisive. The amount in the blood accurately reflects the severity of a Covid disease: the more antibodies to mumps in the blood, the milder the course.
The ten people with the most antibodies even developed immunity to corona. They came to the study because they had been around crown patients for a long time without protection, but they weren’t sick yet. Eight tested positive but did not develop symptoms. 17 had a mild course, eleven a moderate course, and four a severe course.
The study authors write that they began the study last March. Then they were surprised that countries with large-scale MMR vaccination campaigns recorded the fewest deaths per corona. A total of 34 similar studies are mentioned in the work, which have shown various anti-corona effects with the MMR vaccine.
Important knowledge in the fight against Corona
The authors emphasize that with these results they want to help us understand the pandemic and provide clinicians with important knowledge about how to fight the pandemic, even before an effective corona vaccine is available to everyone. The study leaves open what the result really means for the treatment of patients.
