It was a completely dark Sunday for Freinness: the FDP had to resign its last presidium in a larger city in St. Gallen; the government is now headed by a member of the SP. And in Davos, after decades of rule, the party lost Landammann’s office.
At Basel-Stadt, the Liberals even lost their only government adviser: Baschi Dürr (43) was expelled from office. A historic loss, as a member of the FDP has always been in government since the canton was founded in 1833. Now the liberals in the knee of the Rhine are threatened by insignificance.
Even Kovi’s opponents know: “We will vote this x times”(06:35)
Miserable election results
Previously, the FDP had already yielded 1.3 percentage points in the Grand Council elections in Aargau in October. The Swiss FDP had lost the same amount in the National Council elections the previous year. Those are miserable election results.
Petra Gössis (44) once a state sponsoring party is on a crab. During the first Corona wave, the FDP was nationally invisible, but even after the summer holidays, the Liberals were unable to put the accent.
The numerous changes in the general secretariat are also to blame for the political non-existence of the Swiss FDP, but above all in its head: Gössi’s right-hand man and strategist, Samuel Lanz (37), left the private sector. Fanny Noghero, 41, from Neuchâtel, has yet to take hold.
After the failure of the elections in Aargau, the cantonal party criticized the president in a harsh letter. He fails to attract media attention with clear positional references. The letter speaks of “setbacks” that have continued since the 2019 national elections.
For Longchamp, freedom is in an identity crisis
According to the political scientist Claude Longchamp (63), the plight of the FDP is increasingly pronounced in medium-sized and large cities. Here, the free spirit has become a strong competitor to LPG.
And of course, local problems would also be the deciding factor in poor performance, according to Longchamp: “In St. Gallen, civic support was broken and in Basel-Stadt the FDP candidate was accused of underperformance.”
But for the political scientist, the party also has a fundamental problem: “The FDP is in an identity crisis. It is still very connected to the economy, which is pulling in different directions on environmental and European issues. “And for a long time it slept through social change, especially in urban areas, or even denied it.
Gössi aims for success in Valais
Petra Gössi was not available for BLICK on Monday. She only sent a small statement in which she was combative. “We have to make sure that we, together with all the exponents of the party, make our positions better known to the public,” he says.
And he emphasizes that his party has not lost in all areas. The FDP seized the town hall of Brig. The result in Upper Valais shows Gössi “how to participate successfully in the elections”. But these bright spots may not hide the basic problem of the FDP.
