Nearly 140 kilometers off the coast of Florida, the capsized ship’s hull was his last stop: A 62-year-old American was rescued from an extremely precarious situation Sunday by the crew of a container ship. Stuart Bee’s boat could no longer drive after technical problems Saturday, the United States Coast Guard said after the man was rescued.
Bee was reportedly awakened abruptly after midnight Sunday when water leaked into the ship’s forward cabin and pushed him through the hatch. After sunrise, he discovered a ship near him and was able to draw attention to himself. “It’s an incredible result,” said Mark Vlaun of the Jacksonville Coast Guard.
According to the Coast Guard, Bee set sail on Friday afternoon (local time) in Port Canaveral. It was not clear if the man made an emergency call himself after discovering the defect and how long he was in danger. Photos of rescuers posted by the Coast Guard on Facebook showed Bee hanging from the hull of his boat, swimming toward an ejected lifebuoy when the ship arrived, and finally climbing aboard completely drenched.
