The former city councilor, Maria Pappa, will succeed the resigning city president, Thomas Scheitlin (FDP). “I want to be a role model for children and for other women,” Pappa said after the election. “I want to show that anyone can fill that position if they are committed.”

With Pappa, a woman is now head of the city of St. Gallen for the first time. He won the elections with 11,784 votes and thus won over Mathias Gabathuler, who obtained 9,152 votes. The turnout was 48.8 percent
Even if Mathias Gabathuler was not elected to the city council, the political side participant managed to get elected to the city council. There she won with 10,894 votes against Trudy Cozzio of CVP, who obtained 9,039 votes.

The urban electorate also settled on two business transactions. The credit of 47.8 million francs for the new Riethüsli school complex was accepted with 83.6 per cent.
