Delegates say yes – CVP is finally called “Die Mitte” – and merges with BDP News

  • CVP delegates have spoken in favor of calling the party “Die Mitte” in the future.
  • Of 383 delegates, 325 said yes to the proposal, that is, 84.9 percent. The two-thirds majority required for the name change has thus been achieved.
  • Delegates also clearly said yes to the merger with the BDP with 336-25 votes.

This creates a new party at the center of the Swiss political landscape. Delegates from the BDP approved the merger two weeks ago. The new party will be called “Die Mitte”.

The resolution of the merger required the approval of three-quarters of the 363 delegates present. The quorum was 273 votes. The merger was approved by 336 votes to 25 and 2 abstentions.

Delegates, who had met in a decentralized manner in 13 smaller meetings in Switzerland because of Corona, only briefly discussed the merger with the BDP. With the merger, CVP expects growth opportunities. Party chairman Gerhard Pfister said in Unterägeri ZG that the BDP is strong in certain cantons and also has personalities.

Already in a common group

The BDP, which was founded in 2008 by former SVP members, fights like CVP against voter losses. He had already approved the merger with CVP two weeks ago. In the Bundeshaus, the CVP and the BDP, as well as the PPE, have already formed a joint parliamentary group.

Before the vote on the merger, CVP Switzerland delegates had clearly agreed on the new name “Die Mitte” on Saturday after a lengthy discussion. After these strategic decisions, the party can now move on to content, Pfister said.

Amherd: “We have a common goal”

CVP Federal Councilor Viola Amherd said in Lucerne that CVP and BDP have a common goal, namely to hold Switzerland together. They would solve problems instead of cultivating them. Forging commitments is backbreaking work and not “useless.”

It’s worth daring to try something new, Amherd said. The success of “Die Mitte” depends on the party. The objective must be that the population has confidence in “Die Mitte”.

Cantonal parties can decide autonomously if they want to change their name and merge with the BDP.
