Group D: Liverpool bathes cold for Atalanta
Liverpool FC surprisingly missed the first round of 16. The pointless leader was beaten by Atalanta Bergamo with Remo Freuler and Berat Djimsiti at home with 0: 2. Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored for the Italians in four minutes. Liverpool’s defense was too passive both times.
In the other group match, Ajax Amsterdam beat Danish representative Midtjylland 3-1. The Dutch could have won much higher if they had not carelessly missed the best opportunities. Ryan Gravenberch released the home team with the goal of his dreams in the 47th minute. Noussair Mazraoui and David Neres increased before Awer Mabil scored the honor goal from the penalty spot.
This leads to a three-way battle for the two round of 16. Liverpool (9 points) continues to lead ahead of Ajax and Atalanta (7 each).
Group A: Bayern in the round of 16 – Atlético only with a draw against Lokomotive
Last year’s winner wins against Salzburg at home 3-1 and is in the round of 16. Bayern Munich took a few minutes to get into the game. The guests came to various opportunities, but were not taken advantage of. Bavaria then showed impressive efficiency. With some additional players in the starting eleven, Robert Lewandwoski, Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané faced off for Munich. Salzburg came close thanks to Mergim Berisha in the 73rd minute, but it wasn’t enough for more.
In the second game of the group, Atlético de Madrid couldn’t overcome a goalless draw against Lokomotiv Moscow. Once the rojiblancos were already cheering, but Koke was offside in the supposed 1-0. The VAR intervened and the referees correctly annulled the blow. This puts Atlético in second place with 5 points, but Lokomotiv and Salzburg still have a chance of advancing to the ‘premier class’.
Group C: City thanks to away win in round of 16
It was not a high-level match between Olympiacos and Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s team did not have to go to the maximum in Greece. A great combination between captain Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden, who the youngster scored the only goal of the match in the 36th minute, was enough for the English. This means that City are already two rounds before the end of the group stage in the round of 16.
Porto can also plan with the round of 16. Thanks to their 2-0 away win against Olympique de Marseille, who still have no points, the Portuguese are 6 points ahead of Olympiakos in 2nd place in Group C and also have a better goal difference.
