The killer Robert Schmid († 57) wept bitter tears a few weeks ago in an exclusive interview with VIEW when he was tried. Before the Thun BE court, the Oberlander emphasized over and over: “I have been in innocent custody for 960 days.”
The prosecutor accused Schmid of killing his then-girlfriend Daniela S. * († 41) in Frutigen BE in February 2018. To cover up the traces of the terrible act, he then set the old house on fire.
Was he innocent in jail?
However, there was no evidence to support this theory. Only nine tests indicated that Schmid had actually killed. But these were enough for the regional judges: they did not believe in the authenticity of Schmid’s tears and sentenced the former businessman to 16 years in prison in mid-October.
Schmid didn’t want to let this judgment get the better of him. Going to superior court was a decided matter for him. The time already squatting behind bars seemed to have been hell for him. BLICK said the father of the family: “I call this detention psycho-torture.”

Any help came too late for Schmid
A few days ago, the Bern canton police announced the death of a prisoner in the Thun BE regional prison. At BLICK’s request he said on Wednesday: “We can confirm that the deceased is the defendant in the homicide of February 15, 2018 in Frutigen.”
Last Friday, Robert Schmid was found dead in his cell shortly before noon. Cause of death: possibly a medical problem. But this will now be examined more closely.
