On Saturday morning, a Thurbo regional train crashed into a car stopped at a level crossing at Sulgen TG. The vehicle is thrown violently against a system of traffic lights and literally destroyed. The occupants, the handlebar (42) and its passenger, can be put to safety at the last second.
I was reading in the room when it crashed. I thought the roof of the house had collapsed, ”resident Pirmin Wild (66) tells BLICK. The retired SBB driver lives with his wife in the former station manager’s house, right next to the level crossing.
“I have no idea what they were studying!”
After the collision, he ran out of the house, came across a destroyed vehicle and two men who seemed surprisingly calm. “You told me your car was stuttering a bit. There was simply no further progress. But I have no idea what they were thinking! », Wild informs.
The two occupants of the vehicle reportedly stood between the closed barriers for a long time until just before the collision, before practically at the last second they managed to get to safety. “My shocked neighbor yelled at them in desperation, they should finally get off the platform!” Wild said.
No wonder the train could no longer avoid the collision. Thurbo compositions travel to the crash site a bit outside of Sulgen with up to 120 km / h. Why the car stopped on the tracks of all places is now the subject of police investigations.
The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.
According to Michael Roth, media spokesman for the Thurgau cantonal police, they are in the process of putting together the pieces of the puzzle that led to the accident. “We are working in particular with statements from respondents who were able to observe the accident,” Roth said.
Whether the cause of the accident was a driving error or a technical problem should be of particular concern to insurance companies: the accident likely caused property damage of more than 100,000 francs for cars, trains and rail systems.
