A 22-year-old from Zurich was on Wednesday with his 27-year-old partner in the direction of Vrenelisgärtli. The two climbers crossed a roughly 800-meter-long trek with a steep incline in front of the Chalttäli when a slab of snow came loose and carried the previous mountaineer a longer distance.
Together with Rega and Alpine Rescue Switzerland, the Glarus canton police immediately unleashed a major search operation using three helicopters, a drone and a thermal imaging device from the Swiss army.
Rescuers also tried to locate any mobile phone signal of the missing person. The large-scale search has so far been unsuccessful and had to be halted for the time being due to difficult terrain, weather and visibility conditions. (neo)
