It’s a serious blow to the Basel location: US veterinary company Elanco plans to cut 94 jobs. This cuts the Basel workforce from the former Novartis division in half to almost 110 employees.
Elanco will cut jobs in three steps by June 2021, a company spokeswoman told AWP news agency on Thursday about a corresponding report on SRF’s “Schweiz Aktuell” television show. The research and development area with 50 layoffs is the most affected by the reduction.
900 missing jobs in 40 countries
At the end of September, Elanco had already announced a far-reaching restructuring of its global activities after taking over Bayer’s veterinary medicine division. At the time, it was said that around 900 jobs would be lost and costs saved across the group in almost 40 countries.
According to the information, some important functions such as quality management or certain research activities will remain in Basel. Elanco took over the veterinary business in Basel and St-Aubin in the canton of Friborg from Novartis in 2014. At that time, according to SRF, more than 350 employees had worked for the unit.
