Fire in Steinach SG – man rescued with alleged severe smoke inhalation

On Thursday (November 19, 2020), shortly after 4:15 a.m., the St. Gallen Cantonal Emergency Call Center received a report of a fire in an attic on Buchenstrasse. The suspected cause of the fire is an e-scooter battery. The 56-year-old apartment resident had to be taken to hospital by emergency services with suspected smoke poisoning.

According to the 56-year-old man, he was awakened this morning by a noise and noticed a lot of smoke in the attic. Emergency services alerted and then evacuated the two adjoining apartment buildings. The 56-year-old man had to be evacuated through the roof. The local fire department found a damaged e-scooter in the very smoky apartment, the battery of which is believed to have started the fire.

The 56-year-old man was taken to hospital by emergency services on suspicion of serious smoke poisoning. The attic is no longer habitable, the exact amount of damage is still unknown. Since then, the remaining apartments have been released again.

The center of forensic competence of the police of the canton of St. Gallen is now investigating the exact cause of the fire. In addition to several patrols, the police of the canton of San Galo, the local fire department with about 50 people and two ambulances were on duty.
