Papablog: Danke, Remo Largo – «Im Largo steht…»

Our blogger would have shaken his kids even without the new parent’s “Baby Years” bible. But much more nervous.

When a co-worker became a father a few years ago, advice literature was piled up on his desk. At that time he still had no children and, on the one hand, impressed and, on the other, amused. Does anyone read 14 books to properly care for your child? Personally, I dared to have more intuition. Spoiler alert: After Brecht was born, I googled an average of 300 times a day.

But I also learned that there is a book that you just have and, of course, read: “Baby Years” by Remo Largo. The new parents’ Bible, the legal guardian’s Koran, the constitution of the player.

“Urs is dry at night”

Before you think “aha, an obituary”: No, I can’t offer that. I did not even meet Remo Largo briefly, never attended a conference, and have not read any of his other books. I only know the “baby years” and from the images the magnificent mustache of the Swiss national pediatrician.

I would like to sing the praises of the “baby years” with great fervor. What a great book. A comprehensive standard job. None of these advisers wrote a steep educational thesis on the length of a book. However, Largo’s message can be quickly summed up: Children are individuals who develop at their own pace. Parents must remain calm. Just because Ursina is 11 months old does not mean that she should go directly to the gifted support program; And just because Beat was still wearing diapers when he was 3 years old, he didn’t have to leave the highly talented support program that he started.

“Bettina turns upside down”

Despite the simple message, Remo Largo offers solid science in line with his profession, and that is still understandable. The many charts on the age distribution of first words, steps, and tool use impressively show how large the normal range of child development is. Some are already in the middle of their jobs, while others are still crawling. So I felt. If parents compare the steps of their child’s development with the numerous progress curves and bar graphs, in most cases they will calmly realize that everything is in order.

We don’t read “Baby Years” all at once, but alternately and in sections in the months and years after Brecht was born. As we have also been raising a Beebers, we have been picking up the book from time to time from the heavy oak shelf with the excellent literature, which we also like to show the visitor.

In the last almost seven years, many conversations at home began with the words: “En el Largo says…”. Of course, without “El Largo” we would also have made Beebers and Brecht vibrate. But much more nervous.

“Karl looks for the chest”

I also love the rather quirky features of the book: the photographs from decades ago, at least in my 2013 edition, and the names of the boys of the same age: Robert, Sabine, Bettina, Karl, and Urs are the names of the babies in the stories that make up each chapter. initiated.

Remo Largo died a week ago, a little earlier, but according to the age norm. (Excuse me, it had to be. A tribute.) Death is the logical continuation of birth, first words, and potty training. In the meantime, we wish you all a happy life, as Hopefully Long Row did. In any case, it made many parents’ lives much more relaxed. Thanks for that.
