They were together all their lives. And when the virus came, they left together. In just one day. These are the moving stories of two Milan-area couples who fell victim to Corona this November.
Vincenzo M. * († 83) and Olga († 82) were careful. “They barely left the house because they were afraid of getting infected,” his granddaughter Katia told “Eco di Bergamo.” Grandpa only went shopping or to the pharmacy.
And yet it happens: Sesto San Giovanni’s partner (I) contracts the corona virus. First the man gets sick, then the woman. You have a high fever. However, the doctor only prescribed antibiotics, the granddaughter said. The elderly torment themselves for ten days. Then on November 11 they were admitted to a hospital in Monza. Each one in a different room. For the first time in their married life, Vincenzo and Olga separate.
Olga dies and Vincenzo follows her an hour later
“Let me have your jacket,” Olga pleaded with the nurses, “so I can feel your presence.” Fight for four days, then Olga dies. Vincenzo also follows her an hour later. It’s Sunday afternoon, November 15th. It is the end of a great love that began 63 years ago. “My grandparents celebrated their wedding anniversary on September 26,” says granddaughter Katia. They were in love like the first day.
“You don’t go alone”
Ugo C. and his wife Graziella, both 89, cannot separate the virus either. The two former teachers have been married for 65 years. He has four children, ten grandchildren, a great-grandson, and a full life. That will be destroyed in early November. The couple becomes infected.
When the ambulance picks up Graziella, Ugo breaks down in tears. He squeezes her hand and promises, “You won’t go alone.” The day after his wife was admitted to the Niguarda hospital in Milan, Ugo C. also collapsed. He arrives at another corona hospital, many kilometers from his wife.
On November 10, there were two more deaths in Italy’s statistics. They are Ugo and Graziella. He died the same day, just a few hours in a row.
