Ten years ago, on March 14, 2010, a cruel act shook the small town of Metzerlen. In broad daylight, Mayor Ivo Borer (71) was attacked. He died in the hospital three months later. In early December, the alleged perpetrators will be brought to justice, writes the bz.
The process should take five days. The place where the negotiation takes place remains a secret, for security reasons. Dario Paganoni, an employee of the Dorneck-Thierstein Judges Office, writes about the reasons for confidentiality: “It is about the safety of everyone involved in the process.” He is not aware of any previous case in which the location has not been revealed.
Connections to a criminal organization?
There are good reasons for the court’s caution. Several people are accused of allegedly having connections to the Pink Panthers. This is a group that steals jewelry on a large scale and does not shy away from violence. Consequently, Borer should not have been assassinated for his political position, but for his assets. CVP had openly shown that the Borers had money. In the village they knew that there was a safe in the house.
The Swiss woman who drew criminals’ attention to the supposedly easy prey has since died. A 43-year-old Serb and a 40-year-old Dutchman are on trial. They are said to have acted on behalf of a 66-year-old Serb. Other attacks are also said to be the fault of the accused.
«Yes hei my abegschlage»
The two perpetrators are said to have broken into the Borer family home on March 14, 2010, a Sunday. At the time, Borer’s wife was serving the Catholics at the restaurant as usual after their visit to the trade fair. The thieves believed they would have an easy job with the 71-year-old mayor of CVP. But he resisted. However, when Borer was found covered in blood hours later, he only said: “Yes hei my abegschlage.”
He was put into an artificial coma and died three months later in hospital. He could no longer be questioned as a witness.
