After several scandals, the president of the Hospital Council and two other people will leave the management body at the end of June 2021.
Martin Waser, president of the Hospital Council of the University Hospital, will leave his position at the end of June 2021. The University Hospital of Zurich (USZ) reported Monday morning. The nearly 67-year-old man was elected president of the hospital’s council in 2014 by the Zurich governing council. Previously, the SP served as a Zurich city councilor for 12 years.
In addition to Waser, Vice President Urs Lauffer and Annette Lenzlinger will also resign from the USZ’s strategic management committee.
“This decision was not easy for me,” says Martin Waser, who leaves office after 6 years at the helm of the committee. “With our resignations we are creating the prerequisite for the USZ to be able to fully focus on the enormous challenges of today and tomorrow.”
The University Hospital has been in the headlines repeatedly in recent times, among other things because serious accusations had been made against the Heart Clinic and its former director Francesco Maisano (read more here). The USZ does not mention these names directly in the press release. However, he says: “In the current year, the hospital board also had to deal intensively with various staffing problems in the individual USZ clinics that have damaged the reputation of the Zurich University Hospital.”
Search for a successor started
The Zurich Governing Council takes note of the resignations. The search for successors to the vacant positions has begun, writes the Directorate of Health (GD) in a press release. The election of the new members of the hospital council is carried out by the governing council. The election is approved by the Cantonal Council.
The change in personnel and the processing of various structural issues should not affect the operating business of the USZ, continues the GD. The next appointment offers the opportunity to supplement the general profile of requirements of the hospital council. The new president of the Hospital Council should have experience in the operational management of a larger company, if possible in a hospital. Also, the focus on medicine, finance, and communication should come to the fore at the appointment.
During Waser’s tenure, important strategic decisions were made, write the USZ and the governing council. Both cite the preparation of the planned new USZ building in Zurich, the commissioning of the modern materials warehouse in Schlieren, and the opening of the Circle outpatient health center at the airport.
