Vacation photo shitstorm: Flight embarrassment followed by crown embarrassment
Rich celebrities feature their vacation adventures on social media, despite corona’s warnings. That doesn’t go well everywhere.
When someone goes on a trip, they can say something. But should he or she do it too if your country’s population is fighting a pandemic? When are people called to stop traveling? When many people fear for their job or have they already lost it?
Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic apparently thinks: Yes, you can. The 23-year-old has posted many snapshots of her luxurious vacation in the Maldives on Instagram in recent days. With a heart-shaped breakfast raft in the pool, in the hammock, while posing on the beach. So he let his 317,000 followers join in on his vacation.
Baldassare Scolari, professor of media ethics at the University of Applied Sciences in Graubünden, criticizes: “If a prominent person posts such luxurious holiday photos on social media, he shows a lack of awareness of his own role.” Because as a known person you have a different responsibility for your actions. The influence is greater. “In view of the rampant pandemic, the trip to the Maldives itself is questionable,” says Scolari. Self-presentation in luxury is particularly problematic.
Media ethic: “That shows lack of empathy”
Also, according to Scolari, many people were concerned about its existence due to the Covid crisis. “In this sense, exposing one’s own economic possibilities, especially in times of crisis, is questionable from an ethical perspective and shows a lack of empathy.”
Michael Braunschweig, from the Institute for Social Ethics at the University of Zurich, sees it as neutral. He considers the publication of the Bencic vacation photos justifiable. “No one is harmed, no one hurts their dignity.” However, from an ethical point of view, one might certainly wonder what kind of attitude is expressed in such behavior. “Opinions will be divided on this issue,” said the ethicist.
Braunschweig describes two extreme points of view. On the one hand, it could be said that it is an expression of an antisocial attitude. On the other hand, you could say that Bencic was able to afford an expensive vacation even before the pandemic. In this sense, even now, they are only behaving according to their possibilities. The senior assistant at the Institute of Social Ethics says: “I wouldn’t change a thing for anyone if they sat in their room instead of enjoying life in the Maldives. He let his fans share his happiness. ”

Along with Bencic, French-speaking media investor Christophe Rasch, whose CNN Money Switzerland television station recently went bankrupt, came under fire. In the summer, when financial problems were already emerging, he and his partner happily posted photos from their vacation and offended the staff, who have since been laid off.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian recently caused a shit storm. The American invited friends and family to a foreign private island to celebrate a birthday. Photos from the party on Instagram were poorly received.
The billionaire and her “elite friends” were described as selfish. Celebrities don’t have to stick to social distancing, it was said, and users described their financial concerns in the wake of the pandemic. The queen of celebrities defended the trip: “We could pretend that everything was normal for a brief moment.” But he realized that “this is something that most people find very unrealistic at the moment. At times like this, I humbly remember how privileged my life is.
Belinda Bencic declined to comment on the criticism when asked.
