Argentina cannot beat Paraguay 1: 1 at home in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Paraguay’s guests entered the ghost game at La Bombonera, Boca Juniors’ stadium, through a converted free-kick by Angel Romero after a good 20 minutes.
4 minutes before the break, Nicolás González equalized for the “Albiceleste” after a corner with a header. For the 22-year-old forward, teammate of the Swiss Gregor Kobel at VfB Stuttgart, it was the first goal for the Argentine team.
Messi’s blow denied
Argentina had bad luck after the break. After about an hour, the supposed winning goal was only removed by captain Lionel Messi after studying the footage from the video. The 33-year-old’s goal – it would have been 72 in the national jersey – was preceded by a foul.
Although Argentina pushed and had an overall possession of 68 percent, no further goals were scored after the break.
Argentina continues to lead the table in South America with 7 points, but their archrivals Brazil and Colombia can surpass Saturday night.
