Swiss pediatrician and writer Remo H. Largo died Wednesday at the age of 76. This stems from a communication from his family. Largo made a name for himself from the 1990s as an author of educational guides, especially his work “Baby Years” made him famous.
Largo grew up in Winterthur and attended schools here for the first six years with an overwhelmed and violent teacher, as he put it, from whom he had learned almost nothing. He subsequently studied developmental medicine and pediatrics in Zurich and Los Angeles.
Since 1978 he has headed the growth and development department of the Zurich University Children’s Clinic. From 1987 to 1993 he was head of the general polyclinic. The Zurich Longitudinal Studies, which he co-directed, are among the most comprehensive studies on development research in the world.
Remo H. Largo became known to a wide audience through his numerous books: Especially “Babyjahre” (1993) and “Kinderjahre” (1999) became bestsellers and long-sellers. Generations of children around the world – his works appeared in China – were raised according to Largo.
Largo always advocated for careful, loving and patient treatment of children. Financing mania was an abomination to him. “Grass doesn’t grow faster if you pluck it” was one of his favorite sayings. He also advocated the abolition of school grades, which he considered useless from a pedagogical point of view.
Remo Largo leaves behind a wife, three daughters and nine grandchildren. Most recently he lived in Uetliburg SG.
