The number of new infections in Switzerland recently fell by eight percent. But is that enough or should the crown measures be toughened?
The cooperation between the cantons and the balance between the hospitals works basically well, explained Rudolf Hauri, president of the Cantonal Doctors Association, to the Bundeshaus media on Thursday. The high number of daily changes in the usual departments of hospitals is remarkable.
Cooperation at the level of cantonal doctors, cantonal pharmacists and hospitals works well, even if cases reported in the media raise doubts and breakdowns occur, said the canton doctor of Zug.
Due to the large number of changes in normal departments, there is a lot of training and entry work for staff. The high cadence is also an indication of the success of the treatment.
According to Hauri, with the numbers stabilizing, contact tracing can also catch up. The transmission slowly starts up again, “but keeps jerking.” The most common transmission of the virus occurs in families, among friends, and in smaller camps and gatherings.
The testing capabilities are basically good, although there are regional differences. Rapid antigen testing has begun.
Overall, Hauri assessed the situation as still unstable. The level of activity is still high, but little by little a slowdown in growth is being noticed. It is not yet exactly foreseeable “what will come of us with the hospitalizations.”
Cantonmaster Rudolf Hauri too Celebrating Christmas as a family: Can you see your grandparents?
Basically, you can celebrate the festivals according to Hauri. Grandparents should be more careful. One must assess the situation individually. It can also be isolated. A big party is counterproductive.
Despite the emerging flattening of the figures, this is not the time to back down, Virginie Masserey, head of the Infection Control Section of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), told the Bundeshaus media on Thursday. Although reserves remain in hospitals, the number of patients should decrease.
Overall, Masserey sees a “stabilization trend at a very high level.” Of particular concern is the increasing number of deaths related to Covid 19. The positivity rate has stabilized at around 25 percent.
Ackermann appeals: “The goal should be to cut the number of cases in half every two weeks.” So the number of new infections in the new year would drop below 500 per day. “I’ll be honest: we didn’t reach the goal, but we have a perspective for the new year.” To achieve this number, the R-value must fall below 0.8 or even better below 0.7.
But he also mentions that other measures are also an option if the objectives are not achieved.
Task Force Leader Martin Ackermann: “In early October, the four relevant factors doubled per week.” The current value of R is 0.86, which can be classified as positive. However, it could actually be larger because the positive test is still high. The doubling of factors like hospital admissions and deaths also decreases somewhat.
“We may be in the transition, where the number of cases and the other indications are decreasing. But we need a clear and fast decline. We are still in the risk zone ”, warns Ackermann. Hospital capacity could soon be reached.
600 members of the armed forces from all over Switzerland responded to the Defense Department’s call and volunteered for a mission.
This is what Yvon Langel, Major General of the Swiss Army, said in front of the Bundeshaus media on Thursday. For the moment, the army will be deployed until March 31 in the cantons that request support.
Two medical companies were also mobilized. 300 members of the army are currently employed in the assistance service, 200 in logistics.
All the cantons of French-speaking Switzerland, except Neuchâtel and Jura, would now receive support from the army. A deployment in the canton of Ticino is currently under review
“The army will base its operations on the wishes of the cantons,” Langel said.
Virginie Masserey from the BAG is the first to speak: the number of infections is still high, the number of deaths is increasing. Furthermore, the average incidence in Switzerland is currently 1,120 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Fortunately, there is still room to test, adds Masserey. One hopes that the slightly falling numbers are a sign that the corona protection measures taken are working. But now you shouldn’t stop: “It’s important to isolate yourself if you have symptoms and wait for the test.”
It also adds that crawling is at its limit. To relieve the cantons, you must inform your contacts yourself about the infection and quarantine.
