The young female Rohaya saw the light of day at 4.34pm, the Basel Zoo announced on Wednesday. Exactly an hour later he was already standing on his somewhat shaky legs for the first time.
Rohaya’s parents are Sophie, an experienced mother, and Xamburu, 11 years old. According to the ad, Sophie signaled early on that delivery was imminent. Rohaya took three weeks to be born. But then it was quick. As usual with giraffes, little Rohaya glided over the prepared straw layer from a height of two meters.
Animals at high risk at the Basel zoo
Kordofan giraffes have been living in the Basel Zoo since 2011. Unlike other subspecies, they have small and rather irregular spots on the inside of their legs. According to the IUCN (World Conservation Union), the giraffes of Kordofan are in danger. Its population in the wild amounts to only 1,400 animals, with a constant decreasing trend.
The giraffe group at the antelope house, which will be rebuilt in December, now consists of a total of five animals.
