The Swiss team is threatened with relegation from the top division of the Nations League. It would be a great blow.
Which upset many about the introduction of the Nations League. Another competition that nobody really needs. But what would have been the alternative? Continue as before! In other words, just play completely pointless trial matches.
From a sporting point of view, the Nations League is of limited importance, but it still offers some teams the opportunity to qualify for a European Championship through this competition. And the four group winners from League A travel to the Final Four tournament and fight for the title. Like the national team in the first edition, when it finished fourth.
And now there is a threat of relegation from the first division in the second event. Why would it be bitter? At the moment, the national team can compete with the crème de la crème of Europe. Rivals like Germany and Spain are always more attractive than Romania, Israel, Hungary or Finland, for example.
The starting position of the national team is not very promising.
Only if the national team remains in League A can they continue to duel with the best. This is the only way for the team to know where they are, what they still need to regularly face the best teams. It’s also easier for players to motivate themselves for games against the best nations in the already dense schedule.
And viewers are also more likely to stay tuned when there is a pending match against Germany. A sold out cabin (which will hopefully be possible again in the next event) is not to be expected against a team like Luxembourg (C League contender). A match against world champion France, for example, has the potential to draw the masses to the stadium. Television stations would also detect whether Switzerland plays in League A or League B.
For all these reasons, it would be important for the national team to stay upright. However, things look bleak heading into the last two serious battles against Spain and Ukraine. One defeat and it’s over. The fall into no man’s land would be a fact.
Before it comes to the sausage in the Nations League against Spain on Saturday, however, there is a test match in Belgium on Wednesday (8:45 pm on the live ticker). The unpopular friendship kicks have yet to completely disappear.
Criticism from the players and coaches (of the club) cannot be ignored in this regard. Belgium’s star player Kevin de Bruyne was upset the last time they moved in together because there was also a test match on the show. Finally, the coach gave him a break for the match against Ivory Coast (1: 1). The League of Nations, on the other hand, seems to be slowly getting used to it.
