In the animal welfare case at Oftringen AG, the owner of the accused animal will be sentenced to an unconditional imprisonment of ten months. The Zofingen-Kulm prosecutor’s office charged the 58-year-old Swiss with animal cruelty, among other things.
The offense against the Animal Welfare Law should also pay a fine of 3,000 francs, as announced on Monday by the Aargau prosecutor. In early February, several dead animals were found in very poor condition on the man’s property in Oftringen.
Cruelty and violence towards animals and threats against officials
As a consequence of the animal welfare case, the canton authorities increased controls. The authorities were aware of the problems with the owner of the animal. The cantonal veterinary service now carries out “systematic risk-based unannounced checks” on companies. According to their own information, the authorities are also following up on reports from the population.
In the animal welfare case in Oftringen, the Zofingen-Kulm prosecutor accuses the man of, among other things, multiple deliberate and negligent multiple animal cruelty, as well as violence and threats against authorities and officials. For example, in April 2019, during a check carried out by the veterinary service, the man is said to have denied inspectors access to the hen house for laying hens and threatened them with a wooden stick.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the animal cruelty complaints refer to all the defendant’s animal husbandry, that is, sheep and goat farming, chicken farming and pets.
The chickens didn’t even have water
During the police check on February 4, 2020, several dead animals were found, some of which were in very poor condition. The sheep and goats were kept in an enclosure that lacked adequate facilities for feeding. The existing feeders were partially filled with manure.
In addition, the compound contained broken glass, wooden posts, and sharp-edged wire mesh. A sheep died in agony because it was trapped in a wire mesh. The hens did not have adequate water, food or nests for laying hens.
The suspect’s dogs and cats were also found in very unkempt condition during the police check.
Pet owner claims excessive demands
There are also charges against the Animal Welfare Act, which the veterinary service found in the spring and summer of 2019. It involves the carelessness of the woolly sheep. Despite orders from the veterinary service, it is said that they have not been sheared for a long time and in the summer temperatures.
The prosecution had sentenced the man to a sentence in 2019. He objected to this. According to the Public Ministry, the defendant alleges that he was overwhelmed by having animals due to the long and intensive care of his elderly mother and her death.
