Covid 19 disease over, things can only go uphill? Not quite. Because one in five people still have long-term effects after six months. The “Basler Zeitung” reports on a corona study carried out by the University of Zurich.
Consequently, the frequency with which supposedly recovered people still suffer the consequences of infection is still underestimated. The University of Zurich wants to survey a total of 800 people who were infected during the first Corona wave.
One in five with long-term symptoms
So far, 105 people have been interviewed as part of the study. And the interim result is terrifying: 22 percent of those infected still, after six months, have to deal with long-term consequences. People with asymptomatic or mild evolution, but also moderate and hospitalized cases were surveyed.
On average, complaints triggered by the coronavirus lasted 20 days for respondents. But one in five lasted for months. “The deficiencies are not serious for all participants,” says researcher Tala Ballouz to the “Basler Zeitung”.
Still loss of taste, exhaustion, joint pain.
But he also says: “But those affected are much worse than before the Covid disease.” Long-term symptoms include exhaustion, tiredness, loss of taste, and joint pain in particular.
This is confirmed by the Zurich study. Of the 23 affected people who did not feel fit even after half a year, six were noticeably exhausted and tired, two still suffered from loss of taste, and two still suffered from joint pain. 13 did not specify their long-term symptoms.
Older people tend to prefer “Long Covid”
It was also clear that older people tend to develop long-term symptoms. The average age of all those surveyed so far is 43. Those with long-term effects have an average of 58 years. Furthermore, the result shows that 35 percent of those with long-term illnesses were hospitalized in the previous course of illness.
The Zurich study has not yet been completed. Hundreds of people still have to be asked about the “Long Covid” – that is, the long-term consequences of a coronavirus infection. The researchers also explain that their values could be a bit high because more severe Covid-19 cases were tested in the first wave compared to now. (euc)
