Before the start in Valencia, a look at the statistics shows that Lüthi’s good times in Moto2 were not so long ago: the Swiss has the lap record on this track since 2019. But in 2020 Lüthi will only be behind in Valencia !
In the last third GP of the season, the third of the 2019 World Cup did not even reach the points. After starting from 13th place, Lüthi can only stay in the top 15 for a few laps. Then the journey goes backwards. In Friday’s rain training, Tom still drives the best time. But dry, gurgles without possibility.
Lüthi lands in 19th place. It’s a motorcycle disaster like no other and a new low point in the already ruined season. Until now, that was 17th in Brno, in August the break with his team was still evident.
World Cup leader Lowes falls
Now Tom’s departure from the German Intact racing team has been fixed for a long time. Driver and team wanted to get together again for the last races. But now 19th place (out of only 22 drivers at the finish line) only shakes his head.
Crossing the finish line but not getting points? That almost never happens to the former world champion, who would otherwise be constant. Aside from the pointless MotoGP year 2018, Lüthi has only crossed the finish line six times in the 15 years since winning the World Cup outside of the top 15! Two of them in the disaster of 2020.
There are others vying for the title. World Cup leader Sam Lowes (GB) falls second, Enea Bastianini (It) unseats him from the top of the table thanks to fourth place. Race winner: Marco Bezzecchi (It), ahead of Jorge Martin (Sp) and Remy Gardner (Aus).
Jesko Raffin is not a starter in Valencia either. The zurichista had to end the season prematurely after his viral illness and should end his World Cup career due to lack of offers.
Dupasquier lost points in the championship
In the small Moto3 class, World Cup newcomer Jason Dupasquier from Sorens FR also missed the points. The French-speaking country awaited its first points in the World Cup after finishing 20th in the standings. But Dupasquier missed the top 15 in 18th by a full 1.2 seconds and now has only two GPs left to celebrate his points debut this season. Raúl Fernández (Sp) wins the race.
