The canton reported 495 new corona virus infections on Wednesday, more than ever since the pandemic began. The number of deaths has increased to 88 (+2). Furthermore, the canton subsequently reported an additional death for Tuesday.
133 Covid-19 patients were treated in hospitals on Wednesday, the same number as on Tuesday. However, there are now 24 patients in the intensive care or monitoring room. They are five more than Tuesday. More Covid 19 patients were only treated in the intensive care and monitoring rooms in early April.
The Aarau Cantonal Hospital (KSA) has reacted to the increasing number of hospitalized Covid 19 patients and reduced the surgical program for certain non-urgent interventions. It’s not just about having enough free beds available, but also having enough staff. Anesthetists working in the operating room are needed to care for Covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit. In addition to the KSA, the Hirslanden Klinik Aarau also responded. The week before the previous one, they began to further adjust the operational program and postpone certain non-urgent operations.
It could change in the short term
It is important that despite postponed operations, neither the KSA nor Hirslanden reject emergencies. People who need medical attention should not delay a visit to the hospital. Interventions that are postponed are only those that are not urgent. With an operation for inguinal hernia or gallstones, you can wait a few months if the patient has no symptoms.
Ostaargau hospitals have not yet restricted their operations. Both the Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB) and the Muri Hospital emphasize that this could change in a short time.
Currently, eight Covid 19 patients are being treated at Muri. Two of them are ventilated. If there were a growing number of Covid 19 patients, action would be taken, says media spokeswoman Martina Wagner. At Muri, operations would then be reduced to four operating rooms and their use adjusted, Wagner explains. «This has an impact on the implementation of electoral interventions. That means there may be postponements in the future. “
Gallati does not restrict interventions in hospitals
Federal Councilor Alain Berset called on the cantons on Wednesday to restrict electoral interventions. It is unacceptable for certain cantons to carry out elective interventions and reject patients from other cantons, said the health minister. Thurgau’s health director criticized Berset’s interference in this newspaper. Aargau health director Jean-Pierre Gallati does not comment. He did not listen to Berset’s appeal to the cantons and he did not receive his letter to the cantons.
Instead, Gallati explains that the canton of Aargau and the hospitals are very well organized and prepared. Hospitals with intensive care units were instructed to only operate so many operating rooms for non-urgent medical operations that they could create additional capacity in 48 hours if the number of cases increased. “If developments require it, our hospitals can quickly restrict elective interventions or close them altogether,” says Gallati.
He also states that, naturally, hospitals work together in all cantons, even when patients are transferred. “If there is capacity available, Aargau hospitals will accept patients from outside the canton.”
